Shelter Manager Retires

Animal Shelter Manager Jackie Carey, Georgetown Police Chief Wayne Nero, Police Records Supervisor Mary Azam

Congratulations to Jackie Carey (and Mary Azam) on their retirements after 21 years of service with the City. Jackie started as a data entry clerk, began the volunteer and fund-raising programs in the late 90s, and transformed the shelter after she became the director in 2010. We are proud of all we accomplished under her leadership!

From the shelter’s newsletter:

Never did I imagine when I started here in 1995 as a part time data entry clerk that someday I would be retiring from here with a pension!  I’ve had the good fortune of creating this position and doing the things that I enjoyed.  In my tenure I started our volunteer program (hundreds of volunteers have gone thru the orientation), started an education program, and started our temperament testing program. Under my guidance our shelter has achieved “NO KILL” the last 2 years. I’m probably most proud of what a wonderful group of people that I work with!  Our staff here are amazing people that love their jobs and working with dogs and cats.  The compliments that we receive constantly are a testament to their devotion to this shelter. Working with our volunteers has always been the favorite part of my job.  We have several volunteers that have been working with us for 10 years +, and their dedication to our shelter is phenomenal.

Since I’ll still be in Georgetown I’ll be watching from the sidelines and always rooting on our shelter and all of their accomplishments.  If you see me around town, say hello, I’ll be glad to see my old friends!

Thank you for a fabulous ride, it’s very bittersweet to say goodbye.

Jackie

Seeking Garage Sale Vendors!

The animal shelter will be hosting a community garage sale this fall, and we want your participation!   Instead of taking donated items and selling them ourselves in the garage sale, we will be offering spots to people who want to sell their own items.

Reserve a spot in a secure, air-conditioned location!

Benefit from the name recognition of the shelter’s garage sale!

The sale will be held on Friday-Saturday, September 23-24, 2016, at the Community Center in San Gabriel Park.  See more details, and reserve your spot at friendsofgtownshelter.org/garage-sale/

Adoption Event at City Lights

Join us at City Lights this Saturday, July 9th from 1-4 p.m. for our Secret Life of Pets Adoption Event!   We are partnering with City Lights to showcase our dogs and promote the movie, The Secret Life of Pets, which begins showing on Saturday.  We’ll have fun games and prizes as well as many adoptable animals, some that haven’t even been on the “adoption floor” yet.  So come visit the dogs and let City Lights know that you appreciate their support.

City Lights Georgetown is located at 420 Wolf Ranch Parkway, and their website is: https://georgetown.schulmantheatres.com/.

Out on the Catio

Soon the cats at Georgetown Animal Shelter will think they are staying at the Ritz when they get to venture out onto their new Catio (screened porch for Cats).  The “Judith Shirven Catio” is almost complete.  The Catio was made possible by a very generous donation from the Judith Shirven estate, which stipulated that the money be used for cats.  The Friends of the Georgetown Animal Shelter had to think outside the box as to what they could do for cats with a large gift.  Judith was certainly a cat lover, so we think she would love seeing the cats playing on the Catio.
