Georgetown Animal Services

The shelter continues to operate by appointment as much as possible. Staff turnover and an increase in animal intakes have created a need for our staff to better manage workloads while new employees are recruited, hired, and trained.

Appointments are strongly encouraged for priority customer service. Call (512) 930-3592 to schedule an appointment before coming to the shelter.

If you have found a stray, instead of dropping off the animal at the shelter, please consider scanning the animal for a microchip, caring for the animal in your home, and posting on social media.  The shelter can scan for a microchip, as can all Georgetown fire stations.  If you are not able to look after the animal, please make an appointment to bring in the stray animal.  To make an appointment, call 512-930-3592 or email

Appointments are required for surrendered animals to minimize the number of animals coming into the shelter.  If too many animals come in without an equal or greater number leaving, healthy cats and dogs will have to be euthanized. As always, the shelter accepts animals only from people that live within the city limits of Georgetown.  To make an appointment, call 512-930-3592 or email  Surrendering to an animal shelter should be considered a last resort. We offer the following suggestions to those who are considering giving up their pet.

  1. Try to address the reason that is leading to the decision, such as financial or behavioral issues. There are numerous online resources – it simply takes commitment and some time! A good place to start is, which offers resources for helping people keep their pets.  Austin Pets Alive! also has a program, called PASS (Positive Alternative to Shelter Surrender): P.A.S.S. provides individual consultation so that individuals know of additional options to care for or keep their pets rather than surrender them to a shelter.
  2. Reach out to family and friends to see if they can take your dog or cat temporarily.
  3. Sign up for the rehoming program through Adopt-A-Pet, which allows you to be involved in the process of finding a new home for your cat or dog,

Don’t wait until the last minute.  Our pets deserve our best efforts to keep them as part of the family!
