Georgetown Animal Services

Shelter Operations during COVID

Effective Monday, May 17, masks for visitors will be encouraged but not required at the animal shelter. Staff will wear masks when physical distancing is not possible inside of the shelter. The shelter continues to operate by appointment only. Staff turnover and an increase in animal intakes have created a need for our staff to better manage workloads while new employees are recruited, hired, and trained. In the interim, appointments will be required to visit the shelter.

  • Stray animals will be accepted by appointment only. To make an appointment, call 512-930-3592 or email animalsvc@georgetown.org.
  • Lost animals will be returned to their owners through appointments. Owners who are missing pets should complete a lost pet report at https://pets.georgetown.org/shelter-operations-during-covid/lost-pets, email a description to animalsvc@georgetown.org, or call 512-930-3592.
  • Surrendered animals will be accepted only on an emergency basis to minimize the number of animals coming into the shelter. Signs on the door and online will direct people to call for appointments.
  • Adoptions will proceed via appointment. Interested adopters can view dogs and cats available for adoption at https://pets.georgetown.org/available-pets/, and submit an online application. After reviewing the application, staff will reach out to schedule appointments.
  • City licenses will be sold at https://pets.georgetown.org/overview/licensing-your-pets/, or over the phone, email, or postal mail.
  • The spay/neuter clinic scheduled for April will be postponed. Those that are already signed up will be contacted directly.
  • Animal Control will conduct business as usual.

Appointments to drop off stray animals, surrender animals, and reclaim animals should be made during normal business hours. The shelter’s normal business hours are 11-6 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and 12-4 on Saturday and Sunday. Residents may contact the shelter by calling 512-930-3592 or emailing animalsvc@georgetown.org.

Effective Wednesday, March 10, the animal shelter will continue to focus on protecting our customers and staff while providing the highest level of customer service by following these safety measures:

  • Face coverings worn by staff and visitors
  • Staff health screenings
  • Hand sanitizing stations
  • Enhanced sanitization schedules
  • Safe-spacing, floor markers
  • Physical distancing

Appointments are strongly encouraged for priority customer service.

To visit the shelter safely, we recommend:

  • Wear a mask and gloves. Gloves and hand sanitizer are at each entrance.
  • Spend less than a half hour in the building.
  • Check your temperature each day. Fever is a common symptom of COVID-19.
  • Maintain six feet of distance between yourself and anyone not in your household.
  • Practice good hand hygiene. Wash your hands frequently.

We cannot mitigate all risk when visiting the shelter. Please be safe.

As of June 15, the Georgetown Animal Shelter expanded capacity to allow walk-in traffic up to 50% capacity.  Up to four people may visit at one time, whether to purchase city licenses, meet dogs and cats, or conduct other business.  (Please see sidebar for details on adopting, lost and found pets, and surrenders.)

When the shelter is at capacity, a sign in front of the door informs people to wait.  Staff will ensure physical distancing by tracking the number of visitors coming in and out. Due to our small maximum capacity, we recommend and encourage appointments to help us manage the flow of visitors. Scheduled appointments will take priority over walk-ins.  The Re-Tail Store and Catio will be closed to the public.

As of July 3, masks are required.
