Sponsored Senior Adoptions

Local pet boutique Pupology is highlighting the shelter’s senior dogs and cats by sponsoring the adoption fees for them through February 28. Seniors are defined as 7 years or older. Owner Janet Cesarini wanted to do something extra to encourage people to adopt older animals, which are often overlooked.  Quite often, senior dogs and cats make the best pets!

Six seniors have been adopted since the promotion started on January 1 – including long-time residents Sweetie, Tiggy and Emma.  The shelter currently has three senior pets available for adoption, and others will become available over the next few weeks:

  • Mrs. May, 7-year-old Labrador mix
  • Domino, 11-year-old Pit Bull mix
  • Bullet, 7-year-old Pit Bull mix

GTX Residents: 2022 Free Spay/Neuter Clinics for Cats

The Georgetown Animal Shelter announced the dates of the first two free spay/neuter clinic for cats for 2022 – February 26 and March 26, both Saturdays. The goal of the clinics is to reduce the cat population in Georgetown.  This is the eleventh year that the shelter has offered free spay/neuter clinics for cats in an effort to curb overpopulation.

Spay and neuter surgeries and a rabies vaccination will be provided at no charge. Other services available at the clinic include a FIV/FeLV test for $20, an FVRCP vaccine for $5, microchip for $10, e-collar for $10, or cat carrier for $5.

Appointments are required for the free clinics, which are offered on a first-come, first-served basis and are not necessarily for low-income cat owners. Cats or kittens must be at least three months old. Residents may sign up for two cats per clinic.

The clinic is offered only for cats whose owners live in the Georgetown City Limits, so bring your driver’s license or other form of ID that shows your current address.

Call (512) 930-3592 to schedule your cat for surgery. All spay or neuter surgeries will be done by a licensed veterinarian.

The spay and neuter clinic will be held at the City of Georgetown Animal Shelter at 110 W.L. Walden Drive near the McMaster Athletic Fields. Contact the shelter at (512) 930-3592 or by email at animalsvc@georgetown.org. The City of Georgetown Animal Shelter website is pets.georgetown.org.

Adopt Don’t Shop for Christmas

Emma is hoping for a home for the holidays.

Give the gift of love and companionship for Christmas by adopting a dog or cat from the Georgetown Animal Shelter. The shelter is overflowing with good dogs and cats looking for soft beds and full bellies.

The best way to bring a new dog or cat into the family is to have the whole family participate in the adoption process in the weeks leading up to the holidays, rather than surprising a family member with a kitten or puppy.

  1. Start by looking at the available animals, read the descriptions, and think about what kind of qualities you want or need in a pet. Are you looking for a companion who is good or tolerant of other animals? One who is suitable for children? One who likes to go on walks?
  2. Complete the application found on the website, which allows staff to review it ahead of time and be prepared to offer recommendations.
  3. Make an appointment for one-on-one customer service.

If the meeting is successful and you adopt, then you can have fun including the pet in holiday gift-giving by purchasing toys, supplies, or even training. The shelter’s adoption fees are at an all-time low, so you will have extra funds to use. Dogs 8 months or older are $15 (small dogs excluded), and cats 8 months or older are free.

So please adopt, don’t shop this season. In addition to gaining a new furry friend, the adoption would free up a badly needed kennel for another animal.

Animal Shelter joins Clear the Shelters event

Aug 18, 2021

The City of Georgetown Animal Shelter is teaming up with KXAN for the sixth annual Clear the Shelters pet adoption drive Aug. 23 through Sept. 19. Clear The Shelters is an annual national adoption event spearheaded by NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations.

This year, the campaign will combine a month-long virtual adoption campaign, with a single-day adoption celebration on Sept. 18.

During the entire event, the shelter, 110 W.L. Walden Drive, will reduce and even waive adoption fees. Dogs age 7 months or older may be adopted for $15 (medium to large size breeds only), while cats age 7 months or older may be adopted free of charge.

“This campaign couldn’t come at a better time,” Animal Services Manager April Haughey said. “Our small shelter has been overflowing with dogs and cats for the last month. We hope this campaign will reach potential adopters and truly clear the shelter.”

To see the list of available pets and learn how to adopt, visit pets.georgetown.org. The shelter is operating primarily by appointment, with adoption applications required in advance. This process ensures staff assistance and one-to-one interactions with animals.

The City of Georgetown Animal Shelter is the open-intake municipal shelter for Georgetown and has been serving the community since the 1970s. It recently celebrated its fifth consecutive year of achieving a live outcome rate above 90 percent, which means it is considered a no-kill shelter.
