GTX Residents: 2017 Free Spay/Neuter Clinic for Cats

Thomas is a sweet mellow kitten looking for a forever home.

The Georgetown Animal Shelter is again holding three free spay/neuter clinic for cats this spring – February 25, April 29, and June 24. The goal of the clinics is to reduce the cat population in Georgetown.  This is the sixth year that the shelter has offered free spay/neuter clinics for cats, and it seems to be making a difference in the number of kittens ending up at the shelter.

Spay and neuter surgeries and a rabies vaccination will be provided at no charge. Other services available at the clinic include a combo test (feline AIDS/leukemia test) for $20, an FVRCP vaccine for $5, microchip for $10, e-collar for $10, or cat carrier for $5.

Appointments are required for the free clinics, which are offered on a first-come, first-served basis and are not necessarily for low-income cat owners. Cats or kittens must be at least three months old.

The clinic is offered only for cats whose owners live in the Georgetown City Limits, so bring your driver’s license or other form of ID that shows your current address.

Additionally, the shelter continues to offer low-cost vaccine clinics every few months, which are walk-up clinics for vaccinations only, not spay/neuter surgeries.  Dates for the shot clinics can be found at pets.georgetown.org/programs/low-cost-shots-and-neutering/.

Call (512) 930-3592 to schedule your cat for surgery. All spay or neuter surgeries will be done by a licensed veterinarian.

The spay and neuter clinic will be held at the City of Georgetown Animal Shelter at 110 W.L. Walden Drive near the McMaster Athletic Fields. Contact the shelter at (512) 930-3592 or by email at animalsvc@georgetown.org. The City of Georgetown Animal Shelter website is pets.georgetown.org.

Animal Shelter: Bring Your Pets Indoors

dog of week 12-01-12-250

With an arctic front bearing down on Texas, the Georgetown Animal Shelter wants to remind everyone to take special care of their animals this winter.

The best thing to do is to keep pets indoors during bad weather.  In addition to cold temperatures, the wind chill is dangerous, and pets can suffer hypothermia and frostbite.

For dogs and cats that are left outside all the time, make sure to provide a dry, draft-free shelter that is small enough to hold body heat and large enough for them to lie down. The shelter should have supplemental bedding or auxiliary heat and protection from wind and rain.

“We hope people will take good care of their cats and dogs and other animals because it is the right thing to do, but they should also remember animal neglect or cruelty is a citable offence,” according to shelter manager Jackie Carey.

Georgetown Animal Shelter Opens Catio

catio-2

Cats in Georgetown are purring their pleasure at their new digs.  The City of Georgetown Animal Shelter is having a ribbon-cutting on Saturday, October 29, to celebrate the opening of the Judith Shirven Catio, a newly constructed screened porch for cats.  The ribbon-cutting by Mayor Dale Ross will be at 1:00 p.m. at the animal shelter, with tours and cake offered from 12:00-2:00 p.m.

Shirven was an early supporter of and volunteer for the Friends of the Georgetown Animal Shelter, which formed in 2010 to raise funds for the City animal shelter.  Shirven moved to Georgetown in 1999 after living for many years in New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts.  A weaver and crafter, she was also an advocate for animals and left a portion of her estate to the Friends of the Georgetown Animal Shelter to be used for cats.  She died in 2013, leaving behind two daughters and other family.

The Shirven Catio greatly enhances the lives of cats at the shelter by giving them time outdoors in a safe environment, reducing stress and the potential for illness, and giving them mental and physical stimulation. In addition to the construction of the catio, the $75,000 estate gift allowed for the purchase of elaborate cat furniture – specially designed for cats’ needs and ease of cleaning – as well as glass walls for the cat community rooms and air purifiers.

The animal shelter, which is an open admission municipal shelter, recently achieved No-Kill Status for the second fiscal year in a row, with a Save Rate of 93.5%.  Notably, the shelter returned as many dogs to their owners as they adopted out last year.

The City of Georgetown Animal Shelter is located at 110 W.L. Walden Drive near the McMaster Athletic Fields. Contact the shelter at (512) 930-3592 or by email at animalsvc@georgetown.org or online at pets.georgetown.org.

Two Bats Test Positive for Rabies

Two bats found in Georgetown last week have tested positive for rabies. Both bats were collected by Georgetown Animal Services on the north side of downtown.

The bats collected on September 7 and on September 9 were each sent to the Texas Department of State Health Services lab in Austin for testing. Positive rabies virus results were indicated this week.

Animal control officers do not believe that any people have been exposed to rabies from the bats. However, it is important to protect pets by making sure they have a current rabies vaccination.

“Not all sick bats have rabies and not all rabid bats appear sick,” says Kelly Thyssen, animal control officer with the Georgetown Police Department. “If you find a bat, especially if it is inside your home, in an area that a child has access to, in a room with a sleeping person, or if your pet potentially had contact with it, please call us.”

To report a bat or other animal that you believe may have rabies, call the 24-hour number for the Georgetown Police Department at (512) 930-3510. An animal control officer will respond to the report.

For information about rabies in animals, see the Texas Department of State Health Services rabies page at www.dshs.texas.gov/idcu/disease/rabies/information/pamphlet.

The Georgetown Animal Shelter is hosting a low-cost vaccine clinic on September 24. Contact the shelter at (512) 930-3592 to make an appointment at the clinic. The Animal Shelter is located at 110 W.L. Walden Drive.

National Women Build Week

On Wednesday, May 4, a group of female officers and civilian employees with the Georgetown Police Department will volunteer at a Habitat for Humanity of Williamson County (HFHWC) home in Georgetown as part of Habitat’s National Women Build Week.

This is the second year that the Georgetown Police Department will participate.  Almost twenty volunteers will help build a home in Georgetown.  The group is also fundraising for HFHWC to help support future home builds in Williamson County.

National Women Build Week, a weeklong event created by Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program, challenges participants to devote at least one day to help build affordable housing in their local communities. The week also spotlights the homeownership challenges faced by women.

Police Chief Wayne Nero is proud of his department’s efforts. “Several times a year, women from our department get together for professional development. At least once per year they identify a project in which they can engage our community,” Nero said.

“This year, they again are working with the Habitat for Humanity of Williamson County in honor of National Women Build Week. They will be providing sweat equity for a local affordable housing project and have also engaged in some traditional fundraising for Habitat. I am extremely proud of the women in the Georgetown Police Department and am proud to be their Chief.”

Founded in 1999, Habitat for Humanity of Williamson County brings communities and people together to create and sustain home ownership opportunities in Williamson County. Habitat has worked with more than 15,000 volunteers and community donors to help 70 families (with their 165 children) become homeowners in Leander, Georgetown, Round Rock, Taylor, and Jarrell.
